University of Geneva, Switzerland.
27th - 28th July 2006.
A specialist workshop on Multimedia IR.
ENQOIR 2009The ENQOIR workshop targets to deeper understanding and disseminate knowledge on advances in evaluation and application of ontology-based information retrieval (ObIR). The main areas of the workshop is an overlap between three evaluation aspects in ObIR, namely, evaluation of information retrieval, evaluation of ontology quality’s impact on ObIR results, and evaluation of user interaction complexity. The main objective is to contribute to optimization of ObIR by systemizing existing body of knowledge on ObIR and defining a set of metrics for evaluation of ontology-based search. The long-term goal of the workshop is to establish a forum to analyze and proceed towards a holistic evaluation method for evaluation of ontology-based information retrieval systems.

CoLIS 2005 WorkshopEVALUATING USER STUDIES IN INFORMATION ACCESS
The complexity in designing, running and analysing a user study is substantially more time consuming and challenging than a simple comparison of empirical measures such as precision and recall. However, it is only with real user studies that the impact of state of the art research can be truly assessed and the merit of such research validated. As to how a user study should be performed in the context of information access, remains a challenge and those researchers wishing to perform such a study a re faced with many issues to ensure that the research is carried out in an appropriate and unbiased manner.

TLIR'07First Int. Workshop on Teaching and Learning of IR.
It is very important that both undergraduate and postgraduate students understand the basis of IR discipline, not just with the aim of conducting research in the future, but also as a way of learning how search engines work, which are essential tools to use for their own benefit on a daily basis. One way to improve the profile of the subject is to create a common space where IR lecturers and researchers can share their experiences and opinions in the field of IR teaching at any of the educational levels (primary, secondary and tertiary). The aim of the workshop is to provide this common space.

ICTIR 2007Location: Budapest, Hungary Date: 18-20 October, 2007 Purpose It is commonly agreed that the term 'information retrieval' (IR) refers to fetching information relevant to users' information needs from recorded -- using primarily, albeit not exclusively, (generally networked) computer systems -- information. As such, IR -- building firmly on its library science roots -- has by now proved to stretch beyond information and computer sciences, reaching mathematics and linguistics, tackling and challenging new areas like physics, philosophy, sociology, or biology. It is the broad goal of the 1st ICTIR 2007 to be the forum that reflects just this new, multi-valued meaning of IR in terms of new and original results. The purpose of ICTIR'07 is to present, discuss, analyze and integrate new theoretical results in IR, including the traditional and already well-established fields and approaches in IR, but also welcoming new approaches coming from, e.g., physics, linguistics, biology, philosphy, and other areas. Experimental or practical results from new paradigms will be considered as well.
INEX 2007Evaluating the effectiveness of XML retrieval systems requires a test collection where the relevance assessments are provided according to a relevance criterion, which takes into account the imposed structural aspects. In 2002, the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval (INEX) started to address these issues. The aim of the INEX initiative is to establish an infrastructure and provide means, in the form of a large XML test collection and appropriate scoring methods, for the evaluation of content-oriented XML retrieval systems. Evaluating retrieval effectiveness is typically done by using test collections assembled specifically for evaluating particular retrieval tasks. A test collection as such has been built as a result of many rounds of INEX (annually since 2002). In INEX 2007, participating organizations will be able to compare the retrieval effectiveness of their XML retrieval systems and will contribute to the construction of a new XML test collection based on the Wikipedia. The test collection will also provide participants a means for future comparative and quantitative experiments.
